Missing Teenager

We go to bed at night and, we stretch out in the familiar softness, we think of them: How are they sleeping? We cannot bear to think of their parents’ despair: Is there any way their parents are sleeping at night? Are you worried about your missing teenager?

We arrive at the office, the sun filling our space with promise, and we think of them: Are they hungry? Tired? We try not to think: Are they being abused or tortured? Are the missing teens alive?

Pained people around the world gather to recite prayers and psalms. We have resolved to work on improving our character: to let go of negativity and anger; to achieve inner happiness by focusing on the abundant goodness in our lives; to find something to love in every person. We hope that these things will tip the heavenly scales of merit in favor of the boys’ safe return.

What more can we do? We hope, and we pray.

Here are some facts from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, founded by “America’s Most Wanted” TV show host John Walsh more than 30 years ago.

— In 2014, there were 466,949 entries for missing children under 18 into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center.

— The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has assisted law enforcement in the recovery of more than 200,000 missing children since it was founded in 1984. Its recovery rate for missing children has grown from 62 percent in 1990 to 97 percent today.
